Good observability starts with automatic instrumentation. While building Measure, we wanted to automatically capture two things for every interaction: what the user tapped and a wireframe of what the screen looked like at that moment, without taking expensive screenshots or video. This turned into one of the most challenging and interesting things we worked on in Flutter. We’ll follow raw pointer events through gesture detection and hit testing to identify the tapped widget, then traverse the Element and RenderObject trees to produce a compact layout snapshot.
